Housing & Accessibility Accommodations

The Fair Housing Act (42 U.S.C. 3604) prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on disability. Invisible illnesses including Lyme disease, Long COVID, ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, POTS, chemical sensitivity, and mold illness qualify as disabilities under federal law when they substantially limit one or more major life activities.

Under the FHA, tenants with disabilities have the right to make reasonable modifications to their living space at their own expense. For federally assisted housing, the housing provider may be required to pay for modifications. Modifications must be related to the disability and necessary for full enjoyment of the premises.

Some individuals with invisible illnesses report electromagnetic field (EMF) sensitivity. While research is ongoing, the WHO acknowledges electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) as a functional impairment. Practical strategies focus on reducing exposure in sleeping areas and high-use spaces.

• Use wired internet connections instead of Wi-Fi in primary living and sleeping areas
• Move wireless routers away from bedrooms and high-use seating areas
• Use wired peripherals (keyboard, mouse, headphones) instead of Bluetooth devices
• Consider EMF shielding fabric for bedroom curtains or canopy if sensitivity is significant
• Turn off Wi-Fi routers and Bluetooth devices during sleep hours using a timer

When renovating or selecting housing, building material choices significantly impact indoor environmental quality. The International Living Future Institute's Red List identifies materials to avoid. For chemically sensitive individuals, material selection can determine whether a space is habitable.

• Use mineral-based paints (lime, silicate) as alternatives to conventional latex or oil paints
