Bite Response Protocol

Remove the tick

Use fine-tipped tweezers. Grasp the tick as close to the skin surface as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Do NOT twist, jerk, or squeeze the tick body.

Avoid folklore remedies (nail polish, petroleum jelly, heat) -- these can cause the tick to release more saliva into the wound.

Clean the bite area

Thoroughly clean the bite site and your hands with rubbing alcohol, an iodine scrub, or soap and water.

Save the tick

Place the tick in a sealed bag or tape it to an index card. Take a clear photo with a size reference. Note the date and body location of the bite. Some labs offer tick testing for pathogens.

Monitor for 30 days

Watch for: expanding bullseye rash (erythema migrans), fever or chills, unusual fatigue, joint pain or swelling, headaches, muscle aches. Not all Lyme rashes are bulls-eye shaped -- any expanding red area warrants attention.

Seek medical evaluation

Contact a healthcare provider if any symptoms develop. In high-risk endemic areas, prophylactic doxycycline (single 200 mg dose) within 72 hours of tick removal can reduce Lyme disease risk if the tick was attached 36+ hours.

The 72-hour window is critical. Do not wait for symptoms to appear in high-risk areas.
