Look for the USP Verified Mark, which confirms the supplement contains what it claims, is free from harmful contaminants, and was manufactured according to GMP standards. Only ~3% of supplements carry this mark.
NSF International, ConsumerLab, and Informed Sport provide independent testing. Look for certificates of analysis (COAs) from accredited labs. Reputable brands publish batch-specific COAs on their websites.
Common contaminants include heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic), pesticide residues, and microbial contamination. Herbal supplements are particularly susceptible. A 2018 study found 28% of tested Ayurvedic supplements contained detectable lead.
