Why Carry a Medical Card

ER Misdiagnosis Risk

Up to 40% of invisible illness patients report being misdiagnosed in the emergency room. Symptoms of Lyme disease, POTS, and ME/CFS frequently mimic anxiety, panic attacks, or psychosomatic conditions, leading to inappropriate treatment and delayed care.

Medication Interactions

Patients with complex chronic conditions often take multiple medications. Without a clear list, ER physicians may administer drugs that cause dangerous interactions. Fluoroquinolone antibiotics, for example, can worsen neuropathy in Lyme patients and are contraindicated in many chronic illness protocols.

When You Cannot Speak for Yourself

Lyme Disease

Patient may present with neurological symptoms mimicking stroke or MS -- request Lyme-specific testing
Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction possible if on antibiotics -- supportive care, do not discontinue treatment
Cardiac involvement possible (Lyme carditis) -- monitor for heart block, especially in younger patients

ME/CFS

Post-exertional malaise (PEM) can worsen dramatically with physical stress -- minimize unnecessary exertion
Orthostatic intolerance common -- IV saline may help, keep patient supine if possible
Cognitive dysfunction (brain fog) is a real neurological symptom, not anxiety -- do not dismiss

POTS

Tachycardia on standing is the primary symptom -- do NOT treat as anxiety or panic attack
IV normal saline (1-2L bolus) is first-line ER treatment for acute episodes
Keep patient supine with legs elevated -- sitting upright worsens symptoms
May faint without warning -- fall precautions essential

Fibromyalgia

Pain is real and centrally mediated -- do not dismiss as psychosomatic
Opioids are generally ineffective and not recommended -- use multimodal pain management
Allodynia (pain from light touch) may be present -- gentle handling during examination

Long COVID

Symptoms can fluctuate unpredictably -- current presentation may not reflect baseline
Microclotting and vascular issues reported -- consider D-dimer if acute symptoms
Autonomic dysfunction common -- similar to POTS management protocols

Alpha-gal Syndrome

CRITICAL: Do NOT administer gelatin-based medications, heparin from porcine sources, or mammalian-derived products
Anaphylaxis can be delayed 3-6 hours after mammalian meat/product exposure -- extended observation required
Cetuximab and other mammalian-derived biologics are contraindicated
Use synthetic or avian-derived alternatives for all medications when possible

Open Google Fit, go to Profile, then Medical Information. Add your conditions, medications, allergies, and blood type. On Android, this is accessible from the lock screen via Emergency Call, then Emergency Information.
